As the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, he directs cultural policy for the City of New York and oversees City funding and support for over 1,000 non-profit cultural organizations that represent the full breadth of New York City’s rich cultural life. A Queer, Latinx immigrant, Casals is a fervent believer in cultural democracy and equity. Prior to his appointment as Commissioner by Mayor Bill de Blasio, he was Director of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art; Vice President of Programs and Community Engagement at Friends of the High Line; and held various roles at El Museo del Barrio. Ms. Pranita Raghavan is Commissioner Casals’ designee on the Board of Trustees of the Trust.
